04/27/2009 | All Schools (Schools in MA + across the country)

    National Healthy Schools Day

National Healthy Schools Day is an important day to promote and celebrate healthy school environments that are conducive to learning and protect occupant health. Schools, parents, personnel, advocates, and agencies unite nationwide to promote healthy and green school environments for all children.
National Healthy Schools Day is the first day of School Building Week, April 27-May 1.
WE HAVE EXTENDED THIS DATE THROUGH MAY 9TH TO ACCOMODATE MORE SCHOOLS.

    Issue Background

In the US, there are approximately 54 million children and seven million adults (75% female) in the nation's 120,000 public and private schools.

Recent peer-reviewed, published reports have found that healthy indoor environments can reduce asthma and upper respiratory infections among school children, as well as promote personnel health, safety and productivity, and improve achievement. Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism due to chronic illness and a leading occupational disease of custodians and teachers. Healthy indoor environments are also associated with improvements in children's learning and behavior, and therefore can yield even greater benefits and savings than energy efficiencies alone.

EPA has estimated that up to half of all schools may have problems with indoor air quality; the GAO has reported that 25% of schools are structurally unsound.

In collaboration with The Healthy Schools Network and others, greenschools is asking ALL schools to acknowledge this important day by reading the following announcement & highlighting their school's Green/Healthy initiatives on April 27th:
    PLEASE READ THIS STATEMENT:

The _______ School believes it is important to provide our students and staff with an educational environment that is both Green & Healthy.

We would like to take a moment to share some of out Green & Healthy initiatives with you. READ LIST & SHARE WITH YOUR COMMUNITY.

*PLEASE DRAFT A LIST OF INITIATIVES AHEAD OF TIME, AND HAVE KEY STUDENTS/INDIVIDUALS READ THIS LIST.

greenschools would be most appreciative if you would kindly send us a copy of your School's name, location, and initiatives so that we can share your work in our newsletter and on our website in hopes of inspiring positive change in other schools/communities.

    fax: 1-425-663-1757

    mail: greenschools
