Project Green School’s Founder and Executive Director, Robin Buchanan, and Student Officer, Haley, were recently in Lima Peru working with Community Works Institute (CWI). They were attending CWI’s 2020 Institute SOUTH America on Place Based Service-Learning, Sustainability, January 13-17, 2020. They shared their stories, as well as PGS programs, resources, opportunities for the 2020 school year and ways to collaborate. CWI also offers Summer EAST and WEST Institutes in Brooklyn and Los Angeles respectively
CWI’s Institutes focus on Place Based Service-Learning and Sustainability and are closely aligned with PGS programs and Pathways, providing holistic opportunities for K-16 students, schools and community-based educators or teams to begin or advance projects and programs, within classrooms or across grade levels. Institute SOUTH was a powerful week of learning, design, and collaboration in the Peruvian capital of Lima, one of the world’s most richly diverse and culturally vibrant cities. Lima’s January climate offered us excellent Summer weather, perfect for watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean from the Institute’s location at Markham College on the bluffs of the Miraflores neighborhood.
During the week-long Institute participants dug deep into Place Based Service-Learning, Social Justice, and Green Schools, Sustainability, and Global Citizenship, as intersecting approaches that promote academic engagement, social emotional learning, and global competence. Institute workshop sessions were highly interactive and aimed at CWI’s core principle design factors. Participants also worked together in smaller cohorts as a community of practice, focusing on each participant’s own goals and challenges.
During the Institute, Collaborative Ethnography was introduced as a powerful teaching tool. During a street based practicum, participants immersed themselves in studying and understanding the contexts of everyday people in Lima. They will then bring this approach back to their schools and classrooms for local projects with students. Institute participants also explored personal and cultural identities and related issues, worked on unpacking bias and privilege, and considered equity and inclusion in ways that will provide tools for use with students in their own community. This approach will provide educators with excellent strategies for involving their students in deeper critical inquiry work within their local community. Urban poverty, cultural preservation, food insecurity, pollution, and environmental concerns are among the issues that will be explored. There were also opportunities during the Institute to engage in curriculum mapping and alignment in ways that also promote arts integrations and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
